Sanctuary 001 Gym

Sanctuary 001 Gym is where patients and workers can go to work out and get some exercise. It is located on Level 3, along with all of the miscellaneous rooms. Workers mainly use the gym because it is free, and patients can choose whether or not they decide to go. Before being able to use the equipment, patients with electricity, metal, or any matter manipulation powers are given a bright red bracelet so other workers can know they're dangerous. However, unknowing to the patients, the bracelet has a needle hidden in it, and it gently pricks the skin and inserts a liquid that makes their manipulation abilities weaker. Patients are not allowed to weight lift because of the concern of hurting themselves, but any other machine is open for them. By the entrance is a small coffee table that holds a collection of yoga and Pilates discs for anyone to insert into the television and follow along with.

Layla hadn't been to the gym in quite a while, so today she decided to come up alone for once in a while. She had slipped into a loose white tank top and black athletic shorts, shooting glances at her leather jacket and camo pants that she had left in a pile in the corner of the empty gym. She stepped onto the treadmill and sighed, rubbing at the space above the bracelet the guards gave her. It was too tight but of course she couldn't do anything about it with all the high tech locks on it. The bracelet was unfathomably ugly, she thought with a frown, shaking it around and watching herself in the mirror that lined the entire wall. She rolled her eyes and quickly tied her hair up into a ponytail as she pressed the start button and adjusted all the settings. She began at a steady jog, the metal bracelet jingling at her side.

Heather walked into the gym with the bottle of alcohol she'd 'acquired' after going to the cafeteria. She'd stopped off at her room to drop off the other bottles she'd stolen before getting changed into leggings and a tank top then poured the drink into an opaque bottle to keep it hidden. Once she arrived at the gym, she took the bracelet with a roll of her eyes then walked in, taking a long drink from the bottle then noticing Layla. With a quick grin, she walked over, standing on a treadmill that wasn't moving and leaning back onto the handles. "You're here early," she mentioned, pushing herself up so she was sitting on the panel that would activate the treadmill. Because of that, the treadmill turned on, but she scrunched up her nose and leaned off the button to press it again and turn it off. Drinking some more, she leaned her head back and kicked her legs a bit. "Did you even turn up for breakfast?" she asked, noticing her words slurring a bit and leaning down to drop the bottle on the floor so she wouldn't get too obviously drunk this fast.

Layla kept her light jog even after hearing the door to the gym open once more, and at the sound of Heather's voice she pressed the red button on the panel to stop the treadmill. She wiped her hands against her tank top, having been holding onto the metal handles on the side of the machine so it could read her heart rate better. "I just popped in and grabbed a breakfast burrito," she said in response, reaching a hand up to smooth out her hair. She chuckled a bit at Heather when she picked up on her slurring. "Calm down with that sometimes. What is that, vodka?" she flashed a smile, watching the discreet bottle Heather had brought it in.

Shrugging again, Heather rolled her shoulders. "Probably. Might be beer. I'm desperate, I didn't really look. Thank god for dumbass workers, right?" she replied, wobbling slightly but a teaching herself. "This is what happens when I'm sober for... ehh, a month?" she added, flicking her hand in a non-committal way. "I've had half a bottle already. I love life," she laughed, shaking her hair off her shoulders and immediately scrunching up her nose as her head started throbbing for a moment, and she swung her legs again. "Burrito," she then tested, the word coming out more of a 'brrito' so she tried again a couple more times until she got it right, after which she gave Layla a large grin.

Layla rolled her eyes, reaching forward and snatching the bottle from Heather's hands and giving her a condescending look. She popped the top off and took a swig, glad it really was beer. She licked her lips and placed the bottle on the floor, clasping her hands together. "Why don't you get some exercise instead of walking around and drinking all day?" she said, the words rolling off her tongue as her tone changed to one she often used when persuading people. Although Heather knew all of her tricks, it didn't hurt to try. She tapped her finger on the touchscreen of a treadmill next to hers and winked, before starting her light jog again.

"Because I'm sad, sober and paranoid," Heather shot back, scrunching up her nose and jumping off the handles. "Well, was. Might as well try exercising," she added, leaning over to take another gulp of the beer before brushing her hand over the treadmill to try and find out where the button was. Finding it, she pressed it and nearly flew off the treadmill as it started moving. Starting to run, she rolled her eyes and brushed her hair over her shoulders with one hand as the other gripped on. "You know what'd be nicer? If we had a way to listen to music. Do we have a way to listen to music?" she asked, frowning slightly.

Layla frowned at Heather's comment, hoping it was a joke. Despite her exterior, Layla really cared for her friends, and wouldn't want to see them get hurt. She reached out to smack her hand when she took another gulp of beer, although her lips curled into a slight smile. "I'm not sure," she responded to her question about music, but an idea lit up in the back of her mind. She tilted her head backwards to scan the ceiling, and clapped her hands together when she found exactly what she was looking for. A small black speaker protruded from a corner of the room, evidently wireless since there were no nail holes surrounding it. She scrunched her eyebrows together in focus as she began to decrease the gravity in her vicinity. She felt herself becoming lighter, and when she had gained enough momentum, shot up the wall in a quick and fluid movement. She grabbed the speaker with both hands and ripped it out of the wall, only a small chip of paint indicating it had ever been there in the first place. She pushed her feet against the wall and landed heavily with a sigh as she released her control on gravity. She turned on her heels to face Heather, a proud grin plastered across her face. "It's wireless. Maybe there's some sort of music setting in the treadmill." she said, tapping rapidly through the icons on her touch screen.

"Ooh, interesting," Heather replied, pausing the treadmill and leaning over the bar as she looked down at the speaker, brushing her hair behind her ear and tilting her head. "So, there's screens on the treadmill, can you just," she started, shoving her interlocked fingers together and apart repeatedly so she was making a motion that could have implied anything. "Y'know."

Layla raised her eyebrows, spending about five seconds trying to figure out what Heather meant before moving on and ignoring it. She ran a hand through her hair to untangle some knots as she continued tapping random icons. She found one labeled with the exact words she was looking for, and clicked it. Immediately syncing with the speaker, she smiled and gave Heather a thumbs up. "I'll be DJ!" she exclaimed, feeling around the sides of the speaker to find a power button. "Pick a song." she said once finding the button and turning it on. The treadmill's screen lit up with a search bar for songs.

Heather grinned, leaning further over the handle to look at the search bar. "How about something... old, like 21st century old. That was fun to listen to," she suggested, twirling her hair over her finger. "Party music. Like, bouncy. Y'know? I don't want to be sad."

Layla pursed her lips in thought, tapping her nails lightly against the screen to find a few playlists of older generations songs. It was even separated into subsections, labeled rap, indie, pop, and rock. "What the hell is indie?" she said, scrolling through the list of songs and grimacing. "Take a look at the names of some of these kids," she laughed, stepping to the side so Heather could see. "Did people actually like these artists?" she rolled her eyes, turning the speaker she had brought down to adjust some of the settings.

Heather laughed, shaking her head. "What weird names. Try searching through pop. Indie sounds like... classical but with a weird twist, y'know like nature classical. Rock sounds boring and so does rap, but pop has a weird bounce to it," she suggested, her reasoning probably not making sense to anybody but her. She leaned over further, holding out her hand and tapping on a random song as Layla was scrolling. The names were weird, sure, but maybe the music itself was okay? She was immediately proved wrong and quickly leaned over to tap on another song before the screaming that immediately started playing got worse. "Disgusting."

Layla chuckled in agreement, even though she barely understood what drunk Heather was getting at. She continued scrolling and widened her eyes when Heather clicked on a random song, and intensified screaming played through the speakers. "Who the hell listened to this back then?" she said, scrolling through the playlist more as a calmer song started playing. "You know what, let's just put this on shuffle and hope for the best. We need to get some exercise." she winked, hopping off the treadmill and walking over to the cabinet filled with old fashioned DVDs of different pilates workouts. "Pick one!" she waved Heather over and quickly redid her ponytail.

Heather pushed herself off the handle of the treadmill, nearly immediately falling but grabbing on to stop herself. She walked over, pulling her beanie down a bit more and making a ‘hm’ sound. “Weirdos,” she answered, then looked up and down the cabinet with an apprehensive expression on her face. She ran her finger down it, humming something that could have been eenie meenie miny mo, and stopped on a random one. “This.”

Layla followed Heather's finger and pulled the disc out from the shelf. She scanned the cover and chuckled. "High intensity pilates workout," she read aloud, sliding the disc into the DVD player underneath the small television. "Maybe you shouldn't have had that disgusting beer for breakfast." she winked and touched the ground in an attempted downward dog stretch as the pilates program buffered on the screen.

Heather sighed at her luck but was unable to resist a grin. "You never know. The beer makes it more fun," she answered, taking a moment before following Layla's movements and touching the ground. At least that bit was easy, as long as nobody asked her to touch her nose or toes she'd be fine. Hey, that rhymed. "Well, sometimes," she added.

Layla rolled her eyes and glanced up to the television, following the instructors swift movements. She echoed her getting onto her back and lifting nearly her entire body into the air. This is the pelvic curl. Hold for 30 seconds. the instructor said, short bursts of static following her voice as it came from a pair of outdated speakers. Layla inhaled, pressing her arms into her mat and finding a fleck on the ceiling tiles to focus on. "You doing good so far?" she asked through a heavy exhale, holding back a smile.

Heather made a questioning 'mm?' sound, looking over from where she was doing something wrong. "Drifted out. Sorry," she apologised, not particularly meaning it, and glancing up at the television again to follow the instructions some more. "Yeah, sure am. I'm not that drunk. I'm a bit drunk. But not that much. Tox. Toxi. Toxinee. Poison stuff. Remember?" she replied, completely blanking and being unable to pronounce the scientific word for whatever her poison control was. Probably didn't support her point much, but oh well.

Layla curled her lip in a sly grin as she lowered her back to the ground and began circling her legs in the air. "You know, your powers are actually pretty crazy," she said to fill the air as she squeezed her eyes shut to focus on the gravity around her. "But I wonder if you can do anything about this." she burst into laughter as she released her hold on gravity and began floating into the air. She turned to Heather and outstretched a hand, just to make sure she wouldn't puke all over her.

Heather let out a 'woot', grinning. She hesitated before taking Layla's hand, fidgeting with the glove for a moment first, but then grinned even wider. "Maybe not about this, but..." she trailed off, opening her other hand. A few marbles came out of thin air, like melted glass for a moment before forming into small orbs. She floated them into the air, creating more until they were floating around her and Layla like fireflies, but with less light and more reflecting light in different colours.

Layla flipped her body backwards, laughing as she slowly rolled in midair. Seeing the orbs Heather created she grinned even wider, cupping one in between her hands and recoiling back to shoot it into the ceiling. When it came in contact with the tiles it exploded into clumps of tiny purple particles, almost like stars, and left a small hole in the ceiling. "Oops," she covered her mouth in a pretentious little giggle, not even caring about the guards standing just outside the door at this point.

Heather laughed, taking the pieces of the marble that had exploded and bringing them towards her to connect them together and create a sort of purple glass headband slash crown. She put it on her head, then turned to Layla and grinned. "How do I look?" she asked, spinning and giving a curtsy even in the air, which ended with her stumbling a bit and nearly falling back down but grabbing the nearest wall and pushing herself back up. She adjusted the crown, which had slipped slightly, and turned to Layla with another grin.

Layla tilted her head back in another vivacious laugh, accidentally losing her mental grip on the gravity and gasping as she flailed to the ground, landing with a loud thud directly on her tailbone. She groaned, turning onto her side and pressing her fingers onto her back. "Shit. Sorry," she cursed, dropping her entire weight onto the floor and wincing in pain. "I don't think I can finish this pilates anymore." she managed to let out another laugh, the pain already fading, but she still felt the need to be dramatic.

Heather landed on the ground with an 'oof', but put her palms down moments before she landed so she didn't smack her face. She shifted, turning and sitting on her back, and leaned against one of the treadmills with a laugh. "What a loss," she answered, matching Layla's dramatic tone. She groaned, laying down onto the floor and staring up at the ceilings, splitting the orbs into two to create double the orbs (smaller). "And that, my dear, is all the exercise I'll be getting for the next month."

Alexa walked into the room, her pale blue eyes quickly spotting two other people occupying the gym. Half-dreading it, and hoping she wouldn't have to be dragged into an unnecessary conversation, she unzipped her bag of equipment. However, she couldn't help but raise her eyebrow in curiosity at the two girls laying on the ground. And here I thought the gym was for moving your body, She wondered to herself with mild amusement as she wrapped her hand in athletic gauze, all the while peeking at them as they played with their powers.
