We're Sick - Sanctuary 001 Level 2

This is where the regular patients stay, away from the Dangerous Seven. They stay in simpler cells, with five guards at the entrance hallway. The cells have dusty white walls and a black metal bed with a thin mattress. There's a dark grey desk and shelf, where the patient can have a few possessions, and a small black closet where they can store the few clothes they were allowed to bring.

Charlie's dark red curls bounced as she walked in mindless circles in her cell. She counted her steps, embracing the blurred light coming from the small window in her cell even if it wasn't the real world just a few steps away, but a hologram. Her thoughts had kept her up all night again, but she couldn't take a nap now. There were too many things going on during the day, she couldn't just pass out for four hours and not be aware of anything. The scientists might take her again, and drag her to the testing room, and shove more needles into her bruised skin. And Rieka. She was counting on her to protect her against the cruel guards. And so, she continued. She circled her bed god knows how many times, but she didn't stop even when the headache began.

Rieka heard Charlotte's steps from where she was lying down in her own bed, then got up. She walked over to the cell door and tested pushing it open, her eyes lighting up when it did open. She walked to the one next door and hesitantly pushed it open, peeking her head through the door with her sunglasses messily resting on her hair.

Charlie jerked towards the creaking door with widened eyes - her thoughts must be coming true, and the men in the white suits had come to take her. She instantly relaxed when she saw Rieka, and she tumbled onto her bed from the dizziness. "Good morning," She said lazily, playing her fall off as a joke. "Did you sleep well on these shitty mattresses?" She smiled, knowing she had to stay Rieka's comedic relief, otherwise the anxiety would take over. She tells Rieka about her feelings, and by now she knows Charlie's daily routine, but for some reason it felt different at the Sanctuary, and she didn't want to risk Rieka getting tangled in her worries as well.

Rieka smiled and came in, shutting the door quietly behind her. She nodded in answer to Charlie's question and rubbed her neck slightly. She sat down on the floor, her sunglasses falling onto her face. Pushing them back up, she tilted her head. "You were walking?" she asked quietly, playing with her hair a bit.

Charlie leaned her back against the wall, taking off her lace gloves and draping them over the side of the bed. The mattress fell inward where she sat, being worn out by the years of sleeping on it. She pulled a blanket over her legs with a sigh. "Just wasting time," She responded, offering Rieka a quivering smile. "Do you want to draw? The nice guard gave me a bin of markers yesterday." She reached to grab the bin off the shelf above her head, and pulled it down. She unlatched it and took out a thick black marker.

Rieka leaned forwards, nodding. "Where?" she asked, looking around the cell then back at Charlie. She couldn't see anywhere to draw something, but maybe that was just because she was sitting on the floor.

Charlie took a stack of white printer paper from the shelf as well, frowning at Rieka's comment. There was no desk to sit at, the only solid surface taller than the both of them. "We can just sit on the floor," She shrugged, sliding off her bed and bringing the blanket with her. She passed the bin to Rieka so she could pick out colors. Charlie began coloring the entire paper with a blue colored pencil, dotting it with the black marker. "What are you going to draw?" She asked, taking a velvet scrunchie off her wrist and tying up her hair, letting some of the curls fall to the sides of her face.

Rieka scrunched her eyebrows together. What could she draw? She wasn't sure. Then she caught a glimpse of the still raw lines on her knuckles and her eyes lit up. She took a brown pen and messily drew the outline of something looking like a mix of a wolf and a bear. Taking a pencil she coloured it in, trying to be as neat as possible but ultimately failing. Looking up at Charlie and smiling apologetically, she finished colouring in the creature and put the pencil down, then her eyes flashed and she put the pencil back where she'd got it from. She took a silver pen and drew two curved lines out of each of its feet, then put that pen back and looked up at Charlie, then down at the creature. "I'm not sure."

Charlie leaned over and examined Rieka's drawing, the blanket sliding onto her paper. "When did you see that?" She giggled, as if it was normal to see creatures lurking in your cell every night. She decided to draw a nice picture for the guard that gave her the markers, and sat back on her knees. She opened up a light blue marker and started to draw some clouds, starting with basic skills that she had learned from a young age. However, she was stumped, and couldn't think of anything else to add. She grabbed a plastic cup filled with tea that was given to her to help her sore throat and gulped down the last of it to help her decide.

Rieka grinned wildly. "I saw it in the woods. Well, I saw a shadow of it. It was dark," she replied, then slid another piece of paper towards her. She looked at the paper, then folded it in half. Carefully, she folded her left hand in and pushed out the claw closer to her thumb, holding it over the folded paper. She folded it again, and again, then stabbed a hole into it with her claw. Repeating it, she clawed another few holes in, then cut a few lines in it. After, she unfolded it and folded it in a new way to repeat.

Charlie watched Rieka with curiosity, and then an idea sprouted. She folded her own paper in half and then pressed it into an envelope shape. She folded another two or three flaps and then tied another one of her scrunchies around the end to add weight. "Who should I throw this at?" She gave Rieka a mischievous smile, standing and testing her paper airplane. "Any of the patients being mean to you?" She stepped over the marker bin and peered outside her cell door, relieved to see the only guard on duty asleep in his chair.

Rieka's eyes lit up, and she crawled to her feet, following Charlie to the door with her claw still out - there was no point in retracting it and making a mess now. There wasn't anybody specifically picking on her, but she wanted to see that somebody gets hit by the plane. Ignoring how that sentence would have sounded if she said it out loud, she slid her way through the doorway and looked around. Her eyes lit up even more suddenly, and she pointed to the end of the hall. "What if we threw it at the guard from the other end of the hall?" she whispered, far too eager. "He wouldn't know it's us, 'cause we could hide in someone else's room after we throw it!"

Charlie's eyes twinkled as she quietly stepped farther into the hallway. She glanced back at Rieka and winked, bringing her arm back and thrusting the airplane forward. It glided through the air perfectly because of the extra weight she added to the end, and hit the guard right in his shoulder. She clasped a hand over her mouth to stifle the laughter and pulled Rieka along as she ran back in her cell. "What should we do now?" She giggled, jumping into her bed. The springy mattress nearly threw her to the low ceiling.

Rieka laughed as she was pulled in, and her gaze furrowed. She caught her sunglasses as they fell off her head, hand flicking out and putting them back on her head. She tilted her head, thinking, and ended up with both claws out on her hand to make them even. "I don't know," she hummed out loud, rubbing her face as she thought.

Charlie reached a hand up to scratch her chin. Her skin was dry and cracked but she payed no mind to it. "Let's go spy on that kid who can make things explode," She suggested with a snicker. She quickly folded another paper airplane and held it behind her back, but she was intrigued by Nico's powers. She was always messing around in the playroom and has memorized nearly every patient's powers. She knew they would come in handy someday - after all, the Sanctuary wasn't their forever home, and the patients should stick together as long as they can.

Rieka's eyes lit up, then nodded. She peeked her way out of the door again, ignoring the way her claws accidentally scratched the wall a bit and eyed the doorway. She turned to Charlie, unable to remember which room the boy stayed in and smiled slightly.

Charlie craved seeing Rieka smile and laugh. She loved her with all her heart and she never wanted to see her sad. With an exciting twinkle in her eyes, she put the paper airplane on her mattress and grabbed a small ice box. She jogged back out into the hallway, the guard having fallen asleep again, and placed the box outside Nico's cell. She stepped in, folding and twisting herself into the tiny space. She giggled, her contraption sure to fool anyone. "Knock," she told Rieka, lifting her hand and shooting a thick white smoke across her body.

Rieka raised an eyebrow, then followed her out and knocking with the back of her hand, leaning out of the way of her claws as they also hit the door. She tapped her foot on the ground, waiting for Nico to open the door and pursing her lips slightly as she looked around.

Nico sat on his bed, his eyes staring blankly ahead; well literally blankly, for they were covered in a milky white from his infection. Although everything seemed dark for him, he could still sense his surroundings somehow. He had thought it was normal for blind people since everyone said they became stronger in another sense after losing one of them, but the people who tested his powers told him it was because of the radiation. "Not like it did anything, it took away my sight and gave me a crappier version of it," He grumbled to himself, tapping his foot on the ground. He raised an eyebrow as he heard a knock on the door. More testers? It's around breakfast, maybe they're going to tell me to go. He wondered, slightly irritated already. Getting up from his seat, he shuffled towards the door and opened it, scrunching his nose as he could sense a box on the floor. "Whatever sort of food that is, I won't eat your lousy dollar-store breakfast, so you can leave now and throw it in the trash," Nico said, narrowing his eyes as he pridefully stood there, waiting for the stranger's answer.

Rieka tapped her foot on the ground, just remembering she wasn't talking and he wouldn't see her reactions. Well, that might create a bit of a problem. What if... she glanced down at her claws, then gently hit them together then on the ground, like morse code. Hopefully, he could work out what she meant. If not, it'd probably be awkward. More awkward.

Charlie traced her gaze up Nico's body as he opened the door and she hissed inwardly. "Oh, shit, he's blind," She murmured, lifting herself out of the box and kicking it back into her cell. "Well, hello! I'm Charlotte, but you can call me Charlie, and this is Rieka." She untangled some knots in Rieka's hair before realizing he couldn't possibly see that there was someone else next to her. She put her face in her hands, cursing to herself. "I saw you before at the observations room. You can really make things explode?" She asked, hoping changing the topic would allow him to forget about everything she had said earlier.

Nico stood there, his lips pursed together as silence answered his question. He sensed and heard a couple of taps on the floor and narrowed his eyes, questioning to himself what the hell was going on. Finally, someone whispered below where the box sat, and although he hadn't caught what she had said, he made out the word "blind". Nice, you finally noticed. He thought to himself miserably. Nico remained quiet as the girl introduced herself and the other weirdly quiet person named Rieka, wondering why she didn't speak. They seem pretty young to be people working here. Nico pondered, still not replying as they stood there for a few seconds of more silence. His face became puzzled as Charlie asked him about his powers. "How do you know about that?" He finally spoke, wondering if they knew about his wealthy family and somehow were stalking him.

Charlie sucked in a breath, rubbing her temples. "Sorry," She muttered, fighting the urge to test his vision with her hand. "I'm a patient. My cell is right next door. And this is my friend Rieka." She explained more slowly, hoping he would let down his guard a little so they could get to know him. Wondering how his other senses acted, she conjured some water in her hand and twisted it into a ball, letting it hover in the air above her shoulder.

Rieka waved slightly as a greeting, clicking her claws together subconsciously. As she was clicking them, she accidentally caught her arm with one and cut it. Not realising, she just put her hands back down again. Pursing her lips, she decided to retract her claws again. With some effort, she pulled them back in again. Her breath caught slightly as the claws retracted to leave the scarred knuckles below open again, and she bent down to reach into her pocket to grab the bandages she kept at all times. She wrapped them around her hands, then noticed the cut on her arm and did that too.

Nico frowned as Charlie apologized, hating how she was acting so strange because of his disability in his eyes. "Oh," He simply stated, staring blankly ahead past both of the girls. He wrinkled his nose as he heard a trickle and bubbling sort of noise. "I-is that water? What are you doing?" Nico blurted out of both curiosity and slight offense, thinking she was trying to mess with him. The dark haired boy narrowed his eyes in alert as he heard some sort of scratching and the slight, but recognizable scent of blood. With panic, he backed up slightly and planted his foot firmly on the ground, trying to sense what was going on through vibrations in the ground. He could see Rieka's claws draw in and he yelped as he was startled. "What was that?!" He blurted out in a shout, planting his hand firmly on the wall next to him in case he needed to use stone for his defense. It's a trick! They probably think I'm easy to pick on since I'm blind. Do they want my money? Or are they just insane? He began to frantically go over thousand of possibilities, his eyebrows narrowed as his milky white eyes gazed straight ahead.

Charlie's ball of water dissolved a few seconds later before she could think to retract it, since she didn't have a source. She smacked herself in the forehead as he stepped back. "I am just at a godforsaken level of stupidity," She said aloud, nudging Rieka in the shoulder so she would be more careful with her claws. "We just wanted to talk to you because we saw how cool your powers are!" She smiled, but frowned once she realized that he couldn't see her smiling. She felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment, and she stepped back in fear she would provoke him even more if she tried to touch him.

Rieka panicked, holding up her hands. "Sorry!" she yelped slightly, then covered her mouth. She was being more stupid than ever. She held her hands over her mouth, not wanting to send out another scream. She held her hand over her knuckles, resting it just above it so it wouldn't drop but it wasn't uncomfortable either.

Nico's expression became even more puzzled as one of his supposed "attackers" was talking about her level of intelligence. He frowned, stepping forward once again. "Why do you care about my powers so much?" He began, irritation beginning to fill him because of self-pity, "I'm already stuck in this god-forsaken building! ...But my parents will pay me out, just you wait!"

Charlie ran her fingers through her red hair, not knowing how to reply. "We just want to meet new people," She started with a frown. "It's bad enough we have to stay in this building. We should at least all be friends." She hoped a more sentimental response would help Nico open up a little bit. "Sorry to bother you." She finished, licking her chapped lips.

Nico pursed his lips together, clenching his hand into a fist as he remembered all his fake friends he used to have back in his private school. "I guess It wouldn't hurt," He said after a few seconds, realizing he didn't actually want the two girls to leave him, "What would we even do here anyways?"

Charlie's eyes lit up when Nico relaxed. She shot a glance to Rieka, grinning wildly. "There's actually a ton of stuff to do here!" She exclaimed. "From what one of the librarians told me, the old president wanted to make us feel welcome, so he built rooms, all with different things to do," She tried to rack her memory of what there was, and if it was even possible, her grin widened. "There's a gym, and a lounge, and a batting cage! Where do you want to go?"

Rieka pursed her lips, biting them. She shrugged and shook her head, then gently ran her hand along her knuckles. She shook her head again then held up three fingers without stretching out her knuckles. The gym sounded like it was for older people, the lounge sounded kind of boring.

Nico let out an exaggerated sigh, rubbing his forehead. Seriously, these people must be lower class. Their ideas sound completely terrible. Crossing his hands across his chest, he gave his most convincing salesman look to the two girls. "Let's go find a room to relax in. That's what the upperclassmen do, although I'm not surprised neither of you has heard of that," He explained, ignoring Rieka's opinion on Charlie's suggestions, "Plus I'm blind, why would I go to a batting cage, gym or... whatever a lounge is; because I assume that it's nothing like a real lounge." Nico walked forward, once again taking his feet out of his slippers to sense the vibrations in the floor to know where the way out of the hallway was. After turning left, he gestured behind him for Charlie and Rieka to follow without stopping to hear what they thought. Pausing after a few other steps, he flung his slippers off for good. "Screw those, they're only blocking my vision," He muttered to himself with disgust.

Rieka scrunched up her nose. She had no idea what 'upperclassmen' meant, but the way he said it made it sound rude. She followed after him, running a few steps and jumping up onto the wall to push off it so she could catch up faster. Catching her sunglasses as they fell - again - she ran up the last few steps to him and watched from behind, looking up at the older boy. Vision? Letting out a small 'hmp' noise she thought about where they were going and nodded to herself. Relaxing sounded good.

Charlie raised her eyebrows, confused as to what Nico meant by upperclassmen. As he started walking, she followed close behind, her arms instinctively hovering outwards in case he walked into a wall... or something."Y-yeah, the relaxations room has everything for everyone," She explained, although if he knew what it was he must have been there already. "What's your element?" She asked, hoping to continue the conversation with ease. She sped up and walked at his side, keeping a close eye on Rieka as she pushed off the wall.

Nico turned his head suddenly as he heard Rieka jump off a wall, slightly alarmed as a ruckus of sounds followed along because of her sunglasses dropping and running footsteps. He stopped as he noticed a guard standing by the door of the hallway, and stared blankly, and unknowingly at the tranquilizer gun he held. Before addressing the guard, he pointed to the floor. "Stone," He replied monotonously, then turning to the guard staring back at him bewildered, "Where is this relaxation room my friend has mentioned?"

Gracie rolled her shoulders back, fingernails tapping against the screen of her smartphone. She made sure to keep the three children in her peripheral vision as they walked along the hallway. She let her lips curl into that of a smile when the redhead didn't know the other was blind and continued to embarrass herself. Watching the patient's interactions was very interesting to her, and not just for recording it all down on paper. It was nice to know they were still making friends even if they were in this horrible place. When the blind one came up to her, she fixed the collar of her uniform and stepped aside so they could access the exit since it was free roaming time for them. "The relaxations room is up one level. If you go up this staircase you should see it as the first one to your left." She explained, wondering how the blind boy seemed to lead the other two girls. She was just recently put on guard for Level Two - usually she was stationed outside the gym or in the cafeteria, so she had seldom knowledge about the patients' powers.

Rieka gave the guard a thumbs up, jumping up again to push herself off the doorway. She jumped up onto the bannister of the staircase, her light feet hardly making any audible noise as she ran along it and jumped off, onto the wall opposite as soon as she got to the hallway. She jumped off the wall as soon as she landed, landing on her knees and immediately looking behind her to see the other two. She pushed herself up, waiting for them and jumping off the wall while waiting.

Gracie watched them go, raising an eyebrow as Rieka passed and jumped off the walls. Another guard down the hall called her over, and she left them in the staircase.

Charlie continued to flank Nico, not able to process how he was moving so swiftly and knew where the guard was standing. "What do you usually do in the relaxations room?" She asked, keeping a close eye on Rieka so she wouldn't hurt herself, as usual.
