Sanctuary 038 Level 2

Sanctuary 038 Level 2 is where the regular patients stay, away from the criminals. They stay in simpler cells, with five guards at the entrance hallway. The cells have off-white walls and a grey hospital bed with a thin mattress in case of emergency. There are desks and shelves in each room, where the patient can have a few possessions, and a small nightstand where they can store the few clothes they were allowed to bring. Large windows are opposite of the door in each room with thick curtains to draw whenever they please, and two vents are strategically placed above their beds pumping relaxants into an acute percentage of the air.

Charlie twisted in her bed sheets, eyes shooting back and forth quickly underneath her eyelids. She felt rumbling beneath her, low and fast. So rapid that she felt as if she would fall into the core of the earth. She was awoken by the sound of the automated door system flinging her door open. She blinked fast, wiping the sweat from her neck. She shook her head, trying to forget the nightmare that she had nearly every night. She stepped barefoot onto the cold ground and shivered a bit, peering out into the hallway. "Rieka?" she whispered harshly, since her friend was the next door over. "Are you awake?" she coughed, whirling back into her room and slipping socks that were far too small onto her feet.

Rieka hopped off from the bed as the doors opened, hearing Charlie's voice and slipping out the doorway. Tilting her head, she raised her eyebrows and waved hello, brushing her hair behind her ears. Waking up a few hours before the doors opened had its benefits, apparently.

Charlie smiled, taking Rieka's hand and pulling her into her room. She opened one of the small drawers on her desk and took out a stack of cardstock, and a small bin of colored pencils, markers, and crayons. "The nice guard gave me some more materials!" she exclaimed, stretching out onto her stomach and waving her feet back and forth. She grabbed a piece of paper and started tracing some clouds across the page in a light blue color.

Rieka smiled, moving over and sitting next to her on the floor, crossing her legs. Leaning over to take a look, she laughed quietly and leaned back again. Getting up and taking a piece of paper, she grabbed a coloured pencil and moved back to where she was sitting, resting the paper on the ground and drawing onto it.

Charlie finished the messy blue shading across her sheet of paper, propping herself back up on her elbows and craning her neck over to see what Rieka was working on. "Do you know what you're going to draw?" she asked her, tilting her head in various directions to figure out what she was beginning to trace. She reached a hand up to tuck her hair behind her ears, and giggled as she turned to the plastic cup of water on her nightstand. She pointed a finger at it and drew her eyebrows together in focus before it turned into a block of ice, and then she flicked her finger and it turned back. She grabbed it and took a sip, licking her lips with satisfaction when her mission to make it colder worked.

Rieka finished sketching the outline, then leaned back and looked at the very bad monkey. Getting up, she went over to the coloured pencils and picked up a golden-orange colour and a dark grey, moving back over to the image and colouring it in roughly so it looked like a golden monkey. Well, sort of. Finishing, she held it up to Charlie and grinned widely, knowing it was terrible.

Nico shifted in his bed, and he had at least shifted in about twenty different positions, but none of them worked, per usual. He sighed in frustration, and sat up in his bed. Maybe he should ask the guards to give him medicine to fight off the insomnia. However, once his feet touched the ground and sensed the vibrations running throughout the floor, he noticed some people moving around. He shuffled his way to his slippers and opened the door. "Rieka? Charlie?" He whispered into the mostly silent hallway. Ever since the two had coaxed him out of being alone and grumpy in his room, he mostly stuck with them. I suppose hanging out with the commoners is better than wasting my sleeping hours awake in bed doing nothing, He decided in his head. The corner of his lip caused a hint of a smile; he was glad he had actual friends who weren't as snobby and rich as the ones in his old school.

Charlie followed Rieka's hands as they scribbled in some marker, and started giggling uncontrollably when she held up her monkey drawing. "So talented," she said, rolling her eyes but letting her lips curl into a huge grin. She looked up when Nico called their names and waved, but immediately cursed under her breath. He's blind, you dumbass. She pushed herself up and took Rieka's wrist to pull her to her feet as well, skipping over to Nico in the doorway. "Good morning! Did you sleep well?" she asked, easily producing a sphere of water in her palm and tossing it back and forth to have something to do with her hands.

Nico let out a groan as he walked into the room in response to Charlie's question. "No, not at all, I probably got about one hour this time," He sighed, stopping to listen to the sound of water splashing and tensing up, "You better not be planning anything."

Rieka squeaked when Charlie pulled her up and turned her head to glare at the older girl. She listened to the conversation about sleep half-heartedly, her attention mainly on what she could climb onto. She saw the water ball and scrunched up her nose, pulling her wrist gently out of Charlie’s grip and tapping her fingers on her leg as she looked around. Bored, she got her bone claws to come out then ran her other finger down them, walking away from Charlie and Nico to climb up onto a counter in front of the window, holding the blinds apart with her claws and looking through at the surroundings.

Charlie giggled, holding her open palm under Nico's nose and clapping her hands together to pop the water bubble. She had made it mostly gas, so only a few droplets of water splashed onto his face and her hands. "Just practicing!" she exclaimed, twirling around and accidentally knocking down some crayons. She held out her hands again and shut her eyes, creating a much larger block of ice. "Hey, let's all try to do stuff we've never done before with our powers! Wouldn't it be fun?" she suggested, eyes already glinting with excitement. She picked up a stack of paper and starting ripping small pieces out to write up a game.

Nico scrunched up his nose and jolted back as droplets of water hit his face. He snorted, but couldn't help a smile as Charlie turned away to grab paper. "I guess so," He muttered in response, taking a seat on one of the chairs in the room before sensing someone up on the side of the wall, "By the way, what in the world is Rieka doing?"

Rieka turned around at the sound of practising with their powers, watching Charlie grab paper and making a small noise, leaping off the counter and onto the back of the nearby sofa, then from there onto the desk nearer to them both. Claws tapping gently on the desk as she sat down a bit like a frog, her head tilted to the side as she swayed back and fell back onto her backside, moving her legs so they were swinging off the desk.

Charlie dumped out the cup of crayons onto her desk and picked up a purple one. She turned to Rieka and smiled, pushing some pieces of paper towards her. "Help me write some cards for.. hm," she said, scratching her chin. Her eyes brightened with the idea for a game name. "Power roulette!" she giggled and starting writing. "Nico, give me some ideas."

Nico sighed in slight exasperation, crossing his arms. "I can't believe I'm taking part in one of your childish games," He muttered under his breath, "Fine, how about you use your speed to mess with one of the guards outside, like stick a note on his back or something." I would never stoop to such low levels, but she'll probably enjoy it. He thought to himself as a sort of excuse.

Rieka raised her eyebrows, taking one of the crayons and shifting where she sat a little. She bent over, legs still swinging but the top half of her body practically laying on the table where she tried to write as many ideas as she could think of. Which wasn't many. 'Use your bad power on something soft' and 'Mix your element with somebody elses' was about the limit of her knowledge at this point. It was still early and she was too excited to do this! New day! New fun! She could hope, at least.

Charlie grinned, hopping up from her seat and accidentally sending some crayons flying onto the floor. "It's not childish, it's fun!" she exclaimed, taking a red crayon and beginning to decorate a piece of paper. "Hm, what should I write on the note?" she asked, watching Rieka contributing to the game with a smile. She started getting her body ready, taking larger and louder breaths to prepare her lungs for the speed at which she was going to be taking off at.

Nico tapped his foot on the ground, taking a moment to ponder the question he had been asked. "I don't know, something funny," He replied with a huff, "Ask Rieka." The idea seemed great at first, but then he realized he wouldn't even see the reaction happening. Makes more sense for them to decide. He reassured himself, shrugging it off.

Rieka, who looked up at the sound of her name, shrugged. She wasn't entirely sure what they were asking, since she wasn't listening, and tried to smile to see if that would count as an answer. It looked a little bit like she was in physical pain, it looked so awkward, so she quickly stopped and shuffled where she was sitting again. She looked down at her papers again and pushed them vaguely in Charlie's direction, giving her another shrug. That might be what she wanted. Hopefully. Oh well.

Charlie giggled, pushing the papers back to Rieka. "What should I write on this note?" she asked, twirling the red crayon in between her fingers. "I'm going to stick it on the back of one of the guards!" she grinned, starting to decorate the corners of the paper with flowers.

Rieka thought on it for a moment, before leaning forward and taking the note from Charlie, writing 'this person is a furry' and handing it back with a grin. She nodded in satisfaction, sitting back and continuing to doodle on a piece of paper she was supposed to be writing a note on.

Nico tried to hold in a laugh at Rieka's suggestion, and ended up letting out a really loud snort. "Yeah, go with that," He managed to say, unable to hold back a goofy grin. It had been a while since he'd let loose and had a little fun, and it reminded him of when he used to have a normal life.

Charlie took the piece of paper from Rieka and read it, letting out a giggle. "Creative," she winked at her, before grabbing some tape and sticking half of it onto the paper. She looked up to see Nico grinning, and couldn't help but smile in return. Finally, after trying to get him to laugh all day, he seemed a bit more relaxed with them. Her eyes shined with delight as she got up and waited in the doorway, gathering herself together to make sure she ran as fast as she could. She looked down the hallway and saw only a single guard stationed, his back facing her as he tapped his foot repetitively. She quickly turned to give Rieka and Nico a thumbs-up before sprinting towards the guard. She grimaced at how slow she felt she was going, but to the guard she just looked like a flash of black and white. She returned back to her room in less than a second and clasped her hands together. "Done! I don't think he suspected a thing," she giggled, before sitting back in her chair and bringing her hand up to rest her chin on. "Who wants to play next?" she asked, shuffling through some more paper cutouts and grabbing a purple crayon to write more suggestions on them for the game she invented.

Rieka looked up, sticking her hand in the air. She was very eager to go next, not for any particular reason, she just wanted to mess around. And was bored. Plus, it was better than writing ideas down, which she'd since accepted she couldn't do. She was too bouncy and excited to actually think of ideas for things! She did clap for Charlie when her friend came back after running, though.

Nico noticed Charlie's reaction to his smile and quickly brought back his poised and guarded look, before moving on to the next part of the game. "What powers can Rieka use? I only know about her claws, obviously," He wondered out loud while glancing at Charlie, before studying the younger girl once more "...And her knack for acting like a dog." The dark-haired boy only raised his eyebrow. "I mean, what do you expect from the lower-class?" He muttered to himself quietly enough.
