appearance. maia is a pale-skinned girl with curly brown hair. she has one dark brown eye, and the other is dark green, but they both turn golden when she's using her psychometry.
accessories and scars. maia has a small scar on her cheek. she wears a tight green bracelet that helps her telekinesis usage hurt less, and is forced to wear protective gloves that lessen the effects of her umbrakinesis.

personality. maia is very independent and often trails off from the rest of the sad kids club. the only person she really trusts is her best friend, eleanor. she feels insecure and left out whenever anything happens without her, a trait that she hates about herself but can't help. maia is very shy and doesn't trust anyone outside of her group of friends. she is often very clumsy and forgetful, and acts distant from the others and sometimes might wander off on her own. her emotions are extremely unstable, which is why her powers can be dangerous. she is less confident than most, which leads her to rarely ever talk unless she is prompted. she's only been in a single relationship and it ended on a bad note, which is why she is very hesitant about her feelings towards other people now. despite this, maia is very loyal, and in scary situations she is not afraid to go through immense pain to save her friends.

powers.
telekinesis. maia can manipulate objects, people, and creatures with her mind. when amplified by her emotions, her power is strong enough to fling heavy objects, and even people if she tries hard enough. she can cause physical damage to people using her telekinesis as well - she's squeezed workers bladders to make them urinate themselves on multiple occasions. via her telekinesis she can also levitate to some extent. using her power for long periods of time can cause immense headaches.
umbrakinesis. maia can create, shape, and manipulate darkness. she can shoot it out of her hands but if she doesn't have a constant source it wears out quickly. whatever her darkness touches, light cannot reach until she pulls back. she can create temporary constructs and weapons out of her darkness and can teleport short distances between shadows.
psychometry. maia can gain information about a person by touching an object associated with them. along with this, she can see the history of any object she touches, including the maker, user, how many times it's been dropped, and so on. however, when she watches the history of the object, whenever they are touched she can feel it as well. it causes her extreme pain to hold the visions for long, and afterwards she is often very exhausted.

past. maia was adopted at a young age by a nice, middle aged american couple. she never met her birth parents, but her adopted parents tell her that she's named after her grandmother who died before she was born. her parents were always very boring and quiet. she was grateful to have them, but her home life was quite dull. as she grew older, she went through all the different phases. the day before she started eighth grade she impulsively cut off all her hair, which caused her parents to become much less quiet. when she was a freshman she had a boyfriend, but they broke up for unsaid reasons. it took her a really long time to get over him, and she got obsessed with following him around to try and win him back. one day over summer break before sophomore year, she was swimming out at the public pool after hours. she felt weird afterward, but didn't have any trace of a sunburn. she was trying to draw a few days afterward and when she pressed down on the paper, black beams shot out of her hands. she was terrified, and her dad had saw. he immediately called someone named george, apparently a friend of his, and when she heard a knock on the door she suddenly remembered who george really was. her house was flooded with men in white suits and they grabbed her and took her away. she never forgave her father for that, even when he and her mom were allowed to visit her in the first months of her arrival at the sanctuary. she has a theory that the stillness of her old home, with no siblings or pets, in the middle of nowhere, is what led to her timid demeanor.
